Arawak (Taino) Indians
The indigenous people of Hispaniola were the Arawak. Their main religion was voodoo. When forced to leave Antilles, all that was left was stone carvings and pottery. -

Roman Catholicism
With the arrival of the Spaniards, the indigenous religion, voodoo still remained, but Roman Catholicism become the prevailing religion of the country. -
Treaty of Ryswick
Western third of Hispaniola given to France. Known as Saint-Domingue. -
Haitian Revolution
Led by Toussaint- Louverture, overthrew French government. War: 1791- 1803. Unprepared to run a democratic government, became a poor country led by military. -
First "Boat People"
People fled Haiti on boats to go to Florida. -
End of Duvalier Era
"Papa Doc" Duvalier led dictatorship with secret police (tontons macoutes). Later his son took over with the tontons.
