    Christopher Columbus visits the islands of Trinidad and Tobago on the 31st July 1498, naming Trinidad after the three peaks at its south-east corner and Tobago after a local type of tobacco pipe. However because he did not find any gold, they went on a slave raid.

    The Spanish governor who made the most significant impression on Trinidad was Don Jose Marla Chacon, after whom the island's national flower, the Chaconia, has been named. He Arrived in 1784, Chacon settled many land disputes, declared Port of Spain the new capital and initiated development in the more remote parts of the island.

    The first oilwell (also the first in the world) was drilled in 1857, but the industry did not really get off the ground until 1910, when Trinidad exported its first batch - 125,000 barrels- of crude oil. In 1923/24, oil exports for the first time exceeded those of sugar and cocoa combined; by 1936, Trinidad was the leading oil producer in the British Empire. Trinidad and Tobago is the leading Caribbean producer of oil and gas, and its economy is heavily dependent upon these resources.

On August 31, 1962, Trinidad and Tobago leaves the West Indies Feberation and becames an independent nation with Eric Williams as prime minister. The coat of arms image presented was created to celebrate Trinidad and Tobago's independence.
  • The national anthem was created

    The national anthem was created
    The National Anthem was written to celebrate Trinidad and Tobago's independence from Great Britain on August 31, 1962. A nation-wide contest was held in search of the best anthem to accompany this momentous occasion. The winner of the contest was Patrick Stanisclaus Castagne.
