    Women's Rights Movement

    As reform movements occured, women began fighting for their rights. They opened Oberlin College, which was the first co-educational college and they won the right to keep their property after marriage. They also issued the first formal appeal for women sufferage.

    This was the most important time in U.S history because it makes the United States what it is today. If we wouldn't have bought all these chunks of land then the U.S would be smaller today. This spread people out across the country because before they couldn't move west of the Applichantion Mountains.

    Slavery Ending
    Americans begin opposing slavery in the south. Many writers call for slavery to be abolished in all of the United States in various newspapers and anti-slavery publications. Slaves even begin leading violent protests against the white slave owners, which cause the southern states to make laws that restricted what could be said about slavery, and also restricted what slaves could do.

    Monroe Doctrine

    In this year President Monroe issuded the Monroe Doctrine. This was a statement warning European countries not to interfere with the nations in the Western Hemisphere.

    The Election of 1824

    This election was between Andrew Jackson and John Quincy Adams. It destroyed the era of good feeling. This lead up to Andrew Jackson becoming president witch he was for 12 years after. Jackson did many good and bad things one of the bad things he did was that he withdrew to much money from the bank and it later collapsed.

    High Tariffs Placed

    Congress passed a bill that put high tariffs on imported goods to the United States. This hurt some of the colonists if they were big business owners because for everything that came in they would have to pay a tax. Many more bills followed in the years to come.

    Removal Act

    President Jackson signs the Removal Act of 1830, effectively moving the Natives from the east to west, where they would keep their lands "forever". Some Natives were moved peacefully, but others were moved with force by the American Army. They were taken on the Trail of Tears, and thousands died from the harsh journey. The actual ammount of land that they were given however, was much smaller than promised, and they all lived in what is now the state of Oklahoma.

    First Telegraph

    Samuel F. B. Morse created the first succesful telegraph. This was very important. Now they did not have to ride a horse or take a train to the other side of the country to tell them something they could just send it through a telegraph making it a lot easier.

    A depression known as the Panic of 1837 hits America. It affects America greatly, and the blame is thrown upon the newly elected Van Buren. Due to the crisis, he loses his re-election.

    Congress Declares War on Mexico
    On this day President James Polk declared war on Mexico. This was one of the shorter wars in U.S. history but it ended up giving our country some land that was gave to us when the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed about two years later

    In this year gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill California. News of this got to the colonies and everyone wanted gold. They packed there belongings and headed out west. This is important because it moved more people west and not so many people were crammed like before.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo signed

    Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo signed
    On this day the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was officaly signed to end the war with Mexico. This treaty gave the U.S. land from Texas to California and north of California. This now made the United States go from what is now the east coast to the west coast.
