The Election of 1860
Democrats nominated Vice President John C. Breckinridge of Kentucky as their candidate. The republicans nominated Abraham Lincoln. Another political party called the Know-Nothings they elected John Bell of Tennessee.Abraham Lincolns presidency triggered the South to leave the Union was the election of Abraham Lincoln, the Republican candidate, as president in 1860. -

Fort Sumter
Southerners cut off vital supplies and reinforcements. Rarther than either giving up fort sumter or trying to defend it, Lincoln announced that he was sending provisions of food to the small federal garrison. The attack of Fort Sumter and its capture after 2 days united most northerners behind a patriotic fight to save the union. -
Winfield Scott and the Anaconda Plan
General-in-Chief Winfield Scott's proposed this strategy had 2 features, 1st it closed off all ports in the succeeding states and 2nd it had 80,000 men use the Mississippi River as a highway to thrust completely through the Confederacy. Lincoln had already announced this plan he announced that the ports of all the seceded states, from South Carolina through Texas, would be blockaded; later, when Virginia and North Carolina also seceded, their ports were also blocked. -

It was the first major land battle of the American Civil War.

Thomas Stonewall Jackson
Thomas Stonewall Jackson was a confederate general in the civil war. Confederates accidentally shot him at the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 2, 1863, but survived and lost an arm to amputation. However, he died of pneumonia several days later. -
George McClellan
Major general in the civil war and briefly served as the general in chief of the union army. He was known for his ability to plan out and prepare for his battles, but this was also bad because he wasn't able to challenge opponents in a fast moving battle. -
Battle of Antietam
General Robert E. Lee led his army across the Potomac into enemy territory in Maryland. The Union army intercepted the invading Confederates at Antietam Creek in the Maryland town of Sharpsburg. IT was the bloodiest single day of combat in the entire war that took place a day in wich 22,000 men were either killed or wounded. -

Commanding general of the Confederate army. He many victories such as the Battle of Fredericksburg Battle of Chancellorsville Battle of the Wilderness Battle of Cold Harbor Seven Days Battles, and the Second Battle of Bull Run. -
Battle of Fredericksburg
Lincoln replaced McClellan with General Ambrose Burnside, he discovered that a strategy of recless attack could have been worse than McClellans strategy of caution. A large union army under Burnside attacekd Lee's army at Fredricksburg, Virginia and suffered immense losse. -
