Abe Lincoln got involved with politics. He was twenty-four years old when he was elected to the Illinois state legislature. He was in the Whig party. He was against slavery, because it was wrong, and it was not good policy. -
Law Practice
Abe became a leader of the Whig Party. He got his law license and practiced law. He kept his important papers in his hat, so he could get to them if he needed them. -
Married
Lincoln marres a girl named Mary Todd. They were good friends and both from Kentucky. -
Elected President
Abe became the president on March sixth. The North and the South disagreed on slavery. Lincoln got a lot of votes from the North and very little from the South. After he became president, the South decided they did not want to be a part of the United States any more. -
Civil War begins
The confederates opened fire on Fort Sumpter. Abe tried very hard to keep the North and South together. -
Emancipation Proclamation
Lincoln frees the slaves and African-Americans are allowed to enlist in the Union Army. -
Reelected
Lincoln is reelected president. He defeated George McClellan. He told people he wanted to pull the country back together and save the union. -
Civil War ends
General Lee surrendered to Grant. -
Lincoln's assassination
John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln. Abe was at a play, and he died two days later. He was buried in Springfield, Illinois
