Germany counters the Maginot Line to conquer France. France signes an armistice with Germany. -
JAPANESE ATTACK ON PEARL HARBOR
Main cause for the US to join World War 2. Japanese sank 18 ships. They also destroyed 161 planes. -
ENLISTMENT
Pittsburgh has more than 1,200 men enlist in the military. Due to the attack on Pearl Harbor men enlisted throughout the United States. -
BATTLE OF MIDWAY
The turning point of the war in the Pacific. The United States defeats Japan. -
BLACKOUT
The first blackout in Pittsburgh takes place. The blackout was incase of enemy air rades and to stay unseen. -
ARMY WAR SHOW
An Army War Show was given at Pitt Stadium. The show was to inform citizens about the military during World War 2. -
THE BATTLE OF STALINGRAD
This battle was over 5 monthes long. Germany was defeated by the Soviet Union. -
D-DAY
Takes place in Normandy. Allies invade Europe opening the second front in the war in Europe. Largest amphibious assualt to this point in history. -
NO STRIKING DURING WAR
20,000 employees in an East Pittsburgh plant make a pledge that they will not strike for the rest of the war. Which means that they could not strike against pay cuts or anything that would cause them anger. -
WAR CONTRACTS
War contracts in the Pittsburgh district plants totaled $903,398,644. However only $322,000,000 was used for soliders on the front lines. -
ALLIES LIBERATE (FREE) PARIS
Allies force Germans out of Paris. Allies free the French capital. -
FDR RE-ELCETED
Franklin Roosevelt carried Pittsburgh into winning the election for his fourth term. Roosevelt was the President during World War 2 all the way until the final months of the war, due to his death. -
BATTLE OF THE BULGE
Germans counter attack to try to force the Allies into negotiating. Americans turned back the German troops. -
BATTLE OF IWO JIMA
Iwo Jima was captured by the United States because we needed an airfield closer to Japan. The battle showed the US just how far the Japanese would go to defend their country. -
PRODUCTION LOSSES
Heavy production losses in Pittsburgh resulted in less military supplies. Losses due to the river flooding the factories. -
FDR DIES/ TRUMAN BECOMES PRESIDENT
As the war drew to a close Franklikn D. Roosevelt died. Harry S. Truman became president soon after. -
MOURNING FDR
Everything in Pittsburgh was delayed or cancelled inorder to mourn FDR's death. FDR was a great President and leader during World War 2. -
HITLER COMMITS SUICIDE
Due to Hitler not wanting to be taken prisoner by the Soviet Union he chooses suicide. He kills himself by cyanide poisning and a single gunshot. -
PITSBURGH HOME TO THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN SILVER STAR WINNER
Private Woodall I. Marsh was the first African American to win a silver star. He was from Pittsburgh, where people celebrated his acheviements throught the city. -
VE DAY
Victory in Europe day. This is when the Germans surrendered to the Allies. -
SOLIDERS RETURNING HOME
100,000 people came out to downtown Pittsburgh to celebrate. They were celebrating the homecoming of more than 64 enlisted military men. -
ATOMIC BOMB DROPPED ON HIROSHIMA
First bomb drpped on Japan. President Truman decides to use new weapon rather than risk millions of casualties by invading Japan. -
ATOMIC BOMB DROPPED ON NAGASAKI
This was the second bomb dropped on Japan. This bomb convinced the Japanese to surrender. -
RUSSIAN LABOR LEADERS VISIT
Russian labor leaders arrived in Pittsburgh to tour the steel mills. They visited to learn ways to produce steel inorder to help their own war efforts in World War 2. -
VJ DAY
Victory over Japan. For USA VJ Day was on August 14 and for the UK it was on August 15. -
PITTSBURGH HAPPY
Pittsburgh men and women excited about Japan surrendering. Many parties and parades where held downtown. -
WORKERS LAYED OFF
Pittsburgh industries laid off 7000 workers. Due to the cancellation or the war contracts.
