    On September 1st 1939 Germany invaded Poland. This event was also known as the September Campaign or the 1939 Defensive War.

    Many people joined together as a peace demonstration at the county fair. This is done, because Great Britain declares war on Germany.

    On June 22 1940 France surrenders to Germany. This battle was known as the Fall of France.

    The Highland Park Zoo was completely modernized. It was also reopened to the public.

    An army war show was hosted at Pitt Stadium. Pitt was relocated from Pitt stadium, which is three rivers stadium in 2000.

    On June 4th 1942 the battle of Midway was started and lasted until June 7 1942. This war was fought near the Central Pacific Island of Midway.

    The Battle of Stalingrad was fought between Germany and Russia. This event was known as the turning point in WW2. After Germany's defeat Germany's army was now in full retreat.

    D-Day was a battle between allied forces and the Nazi armies. This event took place on the beaches of Normand, France.

    There was a massive rally outside the East Pittsburgh Plant. 20,000 employees attended this rally to plege a no-strike pledge for the war.

    Thousands of Christmas shoppers were trapped downtown due to a 15 inch snow fall. Due to this event many facilities were forced to be closed down for 2 days.

    On December 16 1944 Germany launched the deadliest battle. Doing this Germany tried to split Allied armies with a suprise blitzkrieg.

    Dr. John G. Bowm was the nation's highest paid educator resigned after 15 years. Dr. Rufus H. Fitzgerald,who was the vice-chancellor, was designated his successor.

    On this day U.S armies invaded Iwo Jima and took it over. Which was defneded by about 23,000 Japenese navy and army troops.

    On this day Hitler commits suicide in a bunker under his headquarters. He killed himself but swallowing a cyanide capsule then shooting himself in the head.

    On this dat FDR dies due to a cerebral hemorrhage. That same day Truman becomes President.

    All local facilities like schools, buisness, and some churches were closed on this date. This was due tothe mourning of the death of FDR.

    On this day United States and Great Britain celebrate a victory in Europe. Germany surrenders for them to win this battle.

    Dr. is elected president of Pennslyvania College
    Dr. Paul R. Anderson was elected President of Pennsylvania College. He was the dean of Lawrence Coolege, which is located in Wisconsin.
  • Atomic Bob dropped on Hirosima

    Atomic Bob dropped on Hirosima
    On this date America dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, which was the first deployed atomic bomb. They used a B-29 bomb that destroyed over 90% of the city.
  • Atomic Bomb dropped on Nagasaki

    Atomic Bomb dropped on Nagasaki
    On this date a second B-29 bomb was dropped on Nagasaki killing over 40,000 people. After this event Japan surrendered to the United States.

    A Russian Labor leader visited Pittsburgh. He came here to tour the district's steel mills.

    The city was very excited in celebration of Japan's surrender. Japan surrendere due to the atomic bombs that were dropped.

    V.j Day was the announcement that Japan surrendered to the Allied forces. This event ended WW2.

    On this date the Pittsburgh District laid off 7,000 workers. This was the first war cancellation contract that became effective.

    David L. Lawrence was elected Mayor of Pittsburgh by 12,000 votes. He was also a 56 year old democrat.

    Ordinance set a record
    Council passed an ordinance. This set the highest real estate levy in the city.
  • Pearl Harbor

    Pearl Harbor
    Pearl Harbor was the site of the attack from Japan. This resulted in the U.S entering WW2.
