Germany Invades Poland
On this day German planes bombed Warsaw and other cities. They attacked with 1.5 million troops. -
Peace Demonstration
All people of any religious beliefs went to the County Fair. They had a peace demo when Great Britian declared war on Germany. -
Nations Defense Program
On this day,leaders met with officials. They planned mobilization of our district recources for the nation's 5 million defense program. -
France Surrenders to Germany
Germany took over Luxembourg, Netherlands, and Belgium before France surrendered. Sice they surrendered, Mussolini was pursuaded to join the war on Hitler's side. -
Japenese Attacks Pearl Harbor
Japan attacked a Naval Base in Hawaii between 7-8 a.m. It was a sneak attack no one was prepaed for. -
Pittsburgh Men
Over 1,200 me enlisted for war. All 1,200 men volunteerd in one day. -
Battle of Midway
This battle destroyed Japans naval strengh. In the end, we destroyed 4 aircraft carriers. -
Army Show
On this day a show was given a Pitt Stadium. Otherwise known as the Army War Show. -
The Battle of Stalingrad
This was the turning point of WWII. Many army groups were on different assignments when Hitler called them for this battle. -
War Labor Board
This marks the day steel workers were granted 4 more cents a day. This happened because of the War Labor Board. -
Battle of Iwo Jima
This was one of the three plans we had to win the war. We wanted Iwo Jima not for its quantity but for its tactical importances. -
Charles E. Kelly
Kelly was a local and was awarded the Medal of Honor from WWII. When he came home he was welcomed with a bunch of people lining the streets. -
Pitt Helps War
On this day, Allegheny County residents gave money for the war. This all took place in the Neville Island Area. -
D Day
On June 6 160,00 troops landed on a French coastline to fight Germany. Over 5,000 ships were apart of the invasion. -
Money Not Shared
A study came out in Pittsburgh showing that over 903 million dollars was put in to the war Only 322 million was delivered to the front line. -
Allies Liberate Paris
After 4 years of being under German control, Paris was free. General Philippe Leglerc led the attack. -
Realty Values Drop
On this day, realty vaules dropped over 2 million dollars. This was the worst since 1941. -
Battle of Bulge
This battle was fought during the winter. This was one of Hitler's last attempts to split the allies up. -
VE Day
This day marks the celebration of the Allies. They overran Germany who soon collapsed. -
Losses of Production
There were losses of prduction when people that worked left. There was said to be a flood coming. -
Great Fire
This day marks the rememberance of the great fire in Pittsburgh. This happened in the 1800's. -
FDR Dies
Roosevelt left Harry S. Truman in charge whilw WWII was going on. They think he died of a massive cerebral hemorrhage. -
Truman becomes President
Truman had limited working time with Roosevelt. With in his first week of being president, he was involved in an atomic weapons project. -
Roosevelt's Death in Pittsburgh
On the day of his death, masses and prayers were scheduled al day long. Every thing shut down, including schools. -
Still in Shock
Pittsburgh was still in shock by the death of the president. Some local stores were still closed. -
Hitler Commits Suicide
Hitler shot himself and took pills. Later Germany surrendered and Hitlers 'plans did not continue. -
Atomic Bomb Dropped on Hiroshima
This was our first atomic bomb attempt on them. This was the most powerful bomb used to date. -
Atomic Bomb Dropped on Nagasaki
This was the 2nd attack on Japan in three days. It exploded 1,625 feet above ground and destroyed everything. -
Russian Leaders
Russian labor leaders came to Pittsburgh on this day. They came to tour the Steel Mills. -
VJ Day
This was the day Japan surrendered. August 14th and 15th are known as "Victory over Japan Day". -
VJ in Pittsburgh
The victory was felt all over. On August 14th, the city of Pittsburgh was filled with joy.
