    The German invasion of Poland was the start to World War ll. The Germans demanded the right to construct an extra-territorial railroad across the corridor. The Poles didn't want that, resulting in war.

    When a new government was formed the South Africa declared war on Germany. After Hertzog was defeated with his motion to remain neutral in the war, he decided to resigned.

  • Paris suffers heavy bombing from German

    Paris suffers heavy bombing from German aircraft. 254 people were killed and most of them were civilians.
  • France surrenders to Germany

    The French abandon Paris, declaring it an open city. On June 22, France surrenders to Germany when they signed the armistice.
  • Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor

    On December 7, 1941 the battle group was in position north of Hawaii. When the Japanese attacked on Pearl Harbor this was a turning point for the Americans.

    The United States declared war on Japan. The day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
  • Japanese occupation of Burma

    On May 2, 1942 Japanese troops occupy Mandalay Burma. The Japanese assisted formation of the Burma independence army.

    The Battle of Coral Sea started on May 5 and ended on May 8, 1942. It was fought between the Japanese and Allied navies, 500 miles northeast of Australia.

    The Battle of Midway lasted four days. It was the Pacific Campaign of World War ll that was commonly regarded as the most important naval battle. After the Battle of Midway, the American and thier Allies took the Pacific.

    Germany and its Allies fought the Soviet Union for control of the city of Stalingrad in southwestern Russia. This was a major battle in World War ll that marked the turning of the tide of war in favour of the Allies. The Battle of Stalingrad lasted seven months.

    On the beaches of Normandy, France the Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of fortified French coastline to fight Nazi Germany. By the end of the day on June 6, 1944, more than 9,000 were dead or wounded. D-day ended on August 20,1944.

    Anne Frank was arrested by the Nazis becasue she was Jewish. Her and her family were sent to concentration camps on August 4, 1944.

    The Battle of the Bulge was the last major Nazi offensive against the Allies in World War ll. Hitler attempted to split the Allies in two in their drive towards Germany making them destroy their ability to supply themselves. The main reason the battle ended was because of the lack of fuel forcing Germans to abandon their vehicles.

  • Battle of Iwo Jima

    The United States fought for and captured Iwo Jima from Japan. The United States had to capture the two airfields on Iwo Jima. A group of Marines from United States reached the top of Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945 and raised the American flag. The battle ended on March 16, 1945.

    On April 4, 1945 the Nazi death camp Ohrdruf in Germany was liberated by the US forces. Because the Nazi's begin evacuation the day before.
  • FDR dies, Truman becomes president

    Franklin D. Roosevelt suffered from a massive cerebral hemorrhage leading to death. He had led the nation through the Great Depression and World War II. Harry Truman inherited the presidency from Franklin D. Roosevelt.
  • Hitler Commits Suicide

    Hitler realized that there was no hope left and he feared the possibility of being captured. He commited suicide by swallowing a cyanide capsule and shooting himself in the head. Hitler married Eva Braun two days before his death, she also took the cyanide.

    Great Britain and the United States celebrate Victory in Europe Day. The cities in Western Europe, put out flags and banners, rejoicing in the defeat of the Nazi war machine. The Allies announced the surrender of German forces in Europe.

    In New York on July 28, 1945 a terrible thing happened to the Empire State Building. Thirteen people where killed when a B-25 bomber crashes into the Empire State Building.
  • Atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima

    The city of Hiroshima was the bomber's main target. Around eight in the morning the 9,700 pound bomb was released, over the city. A huge explosion lit up the whole sky, killing many people.

    American forces dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, the second attack on Japan in three days. The bomb was dropped by parachute from an American B29 Bomber. The explosion was about 1,625 ft above the ground, it completely destroyed the city.
