Germany invades Poland
On this day, Germany had disregarded the treaty it signed with Great Britain and France and invaded Poland. This was the start of World War 2. -
Not quite there
My pap was sixteen when the Germans invaded Poland. He remembered hearing what was going on on the radio. -
France surrenders to Germany
After fighting Germany, France had surrendered under special terms. France would be allowed to stay in Vichy France as Germany occupied the northern three-fifths of France. -
Getting closer
My pap was still in school, and nothing was going on to my family during that time. All the information that they recieved was from the radio. -
Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor
Even thought the Japanese were talking about peace, they had other things on their minds. On this date, the Japanese, had six aircraft carriers and 20 ships headed for the harbor, bombing every ship they could. -
One day after work
My pap was working downtown in a printshop and was leaving for the day. When the streetcar came it was completely empty. My pap had wondered why it was so empty and the driver said "What's the matter with you?" the driver then continued to explain how Pearl Harbor was bombed. -
Battle of Midway
In this battle, the Americans wre able to effectively destroy four Japanese aircraft carriers. This was considered to be one of the most decicive battle of the war. -
Family in war
My paps first cousin had died during the battle. His job was to find pilots and rescue them from crashed planes. His uncle had taken the loss very hard. -
Suiting up for war
My pap had graduated from high school. In the following May, he would be drafted into the war. -
Battle of Stalingrad
In this battle, the Americans were able to put a hault in Hitler's plan to overtake the Soviet Union. This was a turning point in the war for the Allies. -
D Day
D Day stands for dooms dame, named by President Rossevelt. This is when the Allies landed on Normandy, the French coastline, to fight advancing German troops. -
The day with no sky
My pap was stationed in England, he was a medic. He and his fellow officers were asleep and were waken up by the roar of the planes. He said that there were so many planes that you couldn't see the sky. -
Stayin on the sidelines
When the Allies were liberating Paris, by pap, the medic, was on the sidelines as they walked in. He was there in case anyone got hurt. -
Allies liberated (free) Paris
The Free French rebellious group, had started uprisings and were lated backed up by the Allies. The Allies really didn't want to go after Paris, they were really after Berlin, however they were, in a way, forced to aid the resistances group. -
Battle of the Bulge
Hitler had started this battle in hopes of braking up the Allies and cutting off their supplies. This battle would be the greatest and largest battle that would be fought by the Americans. -
Segregation of the Army
One part of the Army needed medics, so they took my pap and four other white males. When they arrived they were then only white males there. They were there to assist the engineers. -
Battle of Iwo Jima
The battle of Iwo Jima was part of a three-part plan to, in a way, end the war in the east. If this battle was won, which it was, would be a great victory to the Allies. -
Staying in France for a while
Even after the Allies freed Paris, my pap was still stationed out in France. He was the medic for anyone needing help -
FDR dies, Truman becomes president
Franklin D. Roosevelt, the only president ever, elected for three terms died after fighting polio. After his death, Vice President Harry Truman became president. -
Evacuation
At the hospital in either France or Germany (my pap could remember which one) he heard on the radio what had happen.He and all the men in the hospital were evacuated for a moment of silence. -
Hitler commits suicide
Hitler had been informed that the Russians were close to overtaking a city in which Hitler had a house. He went to his underground chamber and shot himself with his servies pistol. -
Happy days
My pap was on the Germany border when her heard the news. He was working in the hospital. -
VE Day
Abbreviated for Victory in Europe day. On this day, the Germans surrendered to the Allies. -

On VE Day my pap was working in the hospital. He was working in the hospital pretty much right next to were Jesse Owens had proven Hitler wrong by winning multiple gold metals. -
Atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima
The town of Hiroshima was targeted because it was a major military center. After the bomb was droped, nin out of ten people that were directly near the bomb were killed. -
Not on the front line
The atomic bombs that were dropped were dealing with the Navy Pacific which was not my pap. My pap as usual was working in the hospital in Germany. -
Atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki
The atomic bomb dropping was not intended for Nagasaki it was first intended for Kokura. The weather and one of the planes, however, were not cooperating so the next choice was Nagasaki. -
Be a follower not a leader
My pap was working in the hospital and was listening to what was going on on the radio. However, if my pap would have been in Nagasaki, he would have been behind the tanks. -
Almost there
On VJ Day, my pap was working in the hospital in Germany. On May 17 1946 my pap would be official dischargered from the Army. -
VJ Day
Abbreviated for Victory in Japan when Japan surrendered to the Allies. This was seen as the official end of the war.
