Potatoes went bad and there was not enough food so the Irish came to the U.S. -
Anti Coolie Act
Coolie was a bad name for a Chinese person. The Anit Coolie Act limited immigration of the Chinese so they could not come to the U.S. and take the railroad jobs. -
Elections
This was the off term election year for congress. The American party, The Know-Nothings, wanted to scare immigrants out of hte country by beating them up. -
Homestead Act
A law stating that a person in the U.S. had to live on their land for 5 years before they could own it. -
Continental Railroads
the building of the Continental Railroads occurred in 1863. -
Chinese Exclusion Act
for 10 years the Chinese could not come to America -
Immigration Act of 1882
It would cost 50 cents per person when coming to the U.S. (which was a lot of money back then.) and groups of people were ineligable to enter. -

States that all American women that marry a foreigner will lose the privalidge to be a U.S. citizen -

Inacted a literacy requirement. If you couldn't read you could not enter the United States. -
Jones - Shafroth Act of 1917
Was directed towards Puerto Ricans. If you didn't ave citizenship, the only way you could get it was by enlisting the military to fight for WWI. -
Emergency Quota Act
limiting the amount of immigration to 3% each year. -
Alien Registration Act
If you immigrate, you have to have a green card to prove that you are registered with the country. -
McKaren - Walter Act
The act limited immigration and established preferences to family members and people with specific skills.
