    1944 Education Act (The Butler Act)
    A major act which replaced almost all previous education legislation. Replaced the Board of Education with the Ministry of Education. Introduced The Tripartite System of secondary education and made secondary education free for all pupils.
  • 1945 Percy Report

    1945 Percy Report
    Recommended the transformation of some technical colleges into universities, and the establishment of 'institutes of technology.
  • 1946 Barlow Report

    1946 Barlow Report
    The Barlow Report of 1946 on 'Scientific Manpower' identified a critical shortage of scientists and recommended an 'ambitious programme of university expansion'. This would be funded by the Exchequer and would double the annual output of science graduates.

    1946 The School Milk Act
    It provided free milk (1/3 pint) in schools to all children in the United Kingdom under the age of 18 until 1968 when Harold Wilson’s Government withdrew free milk from secondary schools. This policy was extended in 1971 when Margaret Thatcher (then secretary of state for education) withdrew free school milk from children over seven.

    1951 GCE and A-level examinations introduced for pupils at Grammar Schools
    1951 General Certificate of Education (GCE) O-levels and A-levels are introduced, replacing the School Certificate and the Higher School Certificate. These were primarily grammar school exams. Some education authorities established their own leaving examinations for youngsters not taking GCEs.

    Was a school leaving qualification awarded in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
    It was introduced to provide a qualification available to all schoolchildren distinct from the GCE (O-Levels) aimed at the more able pupils, mostly at grammar and independent schools rather than secondary modern schools, aiming for places at a university.

    A government report , which looked at the education of average and below average children. Entitled "Half our Future" the report argued that the future of the country depended on better education for those of below average ability.

    A Government circular issued in 1965 by the Department of Education and Science (DES) to Local Education Authorities (LEAs) to converting their secondary schools to the Comprehensive System. To end the Eleven Plus examination, to eliminate separation in secondary school education.

    Government published a Green Paper called Every Child Matters. This was published alongside the formal response to the report into the death of Victoria Climbié, the young girl who was horrifically abused and tortured, and eventually killed by her great aunt and the man with whom they lived.
