Australia commits troops to the Vietnam War. -
Referendum on Aboriginal rights.
The success of the 1967 Referendum meant that Aboriginies and Torres Strait islander people could be counted as part of the Australian population. It also gave power to the Commonwealth Government to make laws to imporve the living conditions of these people. Aborigines had been given the right to vote in the Federal election in 1962. -

Mabo decision
The High Court Mabo decision recognises native title to land and rejects the doctrine of terra nullius (land belonging to no-one) at the time of European settlement. -
The Wik Decision
The court held that native title rights could co-exist with the rights of pastoralists on cattle and sheep stations.
