Kellogg Briand Pact goes into effect
An agreement with many countries including the U.S., France, Great Britain, Japan, and the Soviet Union, stated that they would not use war as an instrument of a national policy. Though some of these countries would later break this pact as WWII approached. -
Smoot_Hawley Tariff Act signed
Congress signed this new tariff that raised international prices really high so American Buisnesses would have no competition. -
Manchurian Incident
The Japanese blamed the Chinese for the blowing up of a railway and began to attack and invade Chinese occupied Manchuria. After successfully taking the area over Japan claimed that Manchuria would be an independent state even though it was just a puppet to Japan. -
Hitler becomes Chancellor
After losing the Presidential Election in November 1932 to Hindenburg who appointed him Chancellor. Eventually in 1934 Hitler would make his full rise to power and become dictator of Germany. -
Neutrality Act of 1935
This Act basically said the U.S. would be totally isolated from events in Europe. They wouldn't trade with any parties involved in fighting and wanted nothing to do with the events over there. -
Neutrality Act of 1936
Forced the president to declare that a state of war did exist but the law had some provisions that involved the outlaw of loans for the belligerents. -
Japan resumes invasion of China
After taking over Manchuria Japan decides to take its brutal army and invade Japan. The start of this war came at the Marco Polo Bridge incident. Japan held most of the east coast of China in 1941 before China fought back. -
Spanish Civil War begins
After an uprising in Morocco against the current form of government a group of Nationalist lead by Fransico Franco the Spanish Civil war began. The war ended in 1939 with the last of the Republican forces surrendering as Franco became the new leader of Spain -
Gunboat Panay attack
After invading China Japan on the morning of December 12th attacked the USS Panay, a U.S. ship. The ship was used as a bomb shelter for the Chinese army but sunk after Japanese warplanes attacked it. This was a first firm warning from Japan to the U.S. -
Munich Pact signed
Neville Chamberlin makes an agreement with Hitler that involes Britain giving the Sudetenland to the Germans if they agree to stop their agression. -
Germany invades Czechoslovakia
After agreeing to stop the agreesion Hitler goes against the pact and invades the rest of Czechoslovakia with no resistance. Though the French and British did nothing to stop them in an attempt to prevent war. -
Hitler/Stalin Pact
Hitler and Stalin agree to a non-agression Pact that means they will not attack each other. Also they agreed to split up Poland right before Germany attack Poland to start WWII. -
World War II Begins
After agreeing to help Poland if attacked by Germany, Britain and France's worst nightmares come true as Hitler invades Poland. Beginning the Second World War. -
Cash and Carry
After the 1937 Neutrality Act said that the U.S. wouldn't trade with any country but the Neutrality Act of 1939 changedd that. The U.S. agreed to trade but only if the country would come and get the supplies from the U.S. This term became famously known as "Cash and Carry." -
Battle of Dunkirk
The Germans were marching through France and pushed France into a corner. Before France was taken over the Allies made a plan to retreat the soliders out of Dunkirk and into Great Britain. After the efforts of many brave people the French soliders successfully retreated -
Germans take over Paris
After pushing through the defense systems the Germans pushed through Paris and forced the French to surrender Paris. It looked like at this point that the Germans had taken over France. Though the Southern part of France stilled belonged to Vichy France but was a puppet still in Hitler's Germany. -
Battle of Britain
The Battle of Britain begins when Germany air raids the city of London through the German Air Force or Luftwaffe. In the end though the brave efforts of the British citizens and the Royal Air Force successfully defened off Britain from possible world domination. -
America First Committee formed
Lead by Charles Lindbergh the America First Committee was designed to keep America out of war as much as possible. They reviewed how the U.S. got into WWI to make sure it didn't happen again. -
Destroyers for Bases Act
This deal between Britain and the U.S. stated that the U.S. would give Britain old naval destroyers for Britain bases rights in return. -
Lend Lease Act Signed
The Lend Lease Act allowed the president to give aid to those fighting countries who were on the side of the Allies. -
Pearl Harbor
Japanese commander Tojo attacked the U.S. naval base of Pearl Harbor at 7:00 am. The U.S. knew their would be an attack by Japan but they just didn't know where. -
U.S. Enters the War
Franklin Roosevelt signs a declaration of war on Japan after the attacks on Pearl Harbor. A little while later Italy and Germany declared war on the U.S.
