The US and the USSR were competing against each other in the so called "Space Race." The USSR is the first one to launch their satellite into orbit successfully, a major win for them (Until the Americans put a man on the moon.) -
Alaska become part of the US
Alaska used to just be a US territory, until enough people moved over. On January 3rd, 1959 Alaska becomes the official 49th state of the USA.
