5 Events that led to Japan's Annexation of Korea

  • Treaty of Kanagawa

    Treaty of Kanagawa
    The United States was the cause of this treaty. The US decided to put Japan out of its isolation policy, they wanted to open it up. After signing the Treaty of Kanagawa Japan was not isolated anymore. So it has contact with the rest of the world.
  • Meiji Restoration

    Meiji Restoration
    The Meiji restoration was caused by Tokugawa Shogunate because they signed treaties with the West that ended Japan's isolation. As a result of the Meiji restoration Japan is industrialized, educated, and has professional military.
  • Yamagata Arimoto

    Yamagata Arimoto
    A Parliament was created after the Meiji Restoration, Yamagata Arimoto was one of the seven statesmen. He was a field marshal and war minister during the Sino-Japanese war. Because of Yamagata Arimoto's encouragement of ultra-nationalistic secret societies called Gen Yosha the Japanese pressed for war.
  • Tonghak rebellion

    Tonghak rebellion
    The Tonghak rebellion was caused because of teh peasants being disontent (high taxes and lack of justice). It was also caused because of the Japanese and the Chinese presence in Korea. When the rebellion ended, it caused the Seno-Japanese war.
  • Sino-Japanese war

    Sino-Japanese war
    This was was mainly caused by the Tonghak rebellion. Then the treaty of shimonoseki ended this war. The treaty was signed by Ito Hirobumi (Japan) and Li Hung-chang (China). China was defeated in the war and the treaty that the Chinese signed had harsh terms, the treaty ended the control of China over Korea and made Korea an independent country. Also Japan made China open 5 new ports. So this was ended China with a big loss.
