  • The Command Economy Stagnates

    The Soviet Union faced several severe problems brought on by the economy. Central economic planning led to inefficiency and waste. When in competition with the economies of the west, the Soviet economy began to collapse.

  • Gorbachev Comes Into Power

    When Mikhail Gorbachev came into power in 1985, tried to reform the Soviet Union. He sought to end the tension and hostility brought on by the Cold War. He did many things to reform the Soviet Union including renouncing the Brezhnev Doctrine, ending censorship, urging perestroika and many other things.

  • The Soviet Union Ends

    In December of 1991, the Soviet Union had officially ended after 70 years of instilling terror. The 15 republics of the former Soviet Union had become independent nations.
