5/16/17 Violence Timeline

  • Libya and Gaddafi

    In 1988 a bomb destroyed a Pan American
    airliner flying over Lockerbie, Scotland. All 259 aboard were killed, including many Americans. The bomb was traced to two Libyans, but Gadhafi refused to send them to the United States for trial.
  • Civil War in Africa

    Civil War among Liberia, Somalia, Mali, and Zambia. The UN launched an organization to provide relief.
  • Breakup of Yugoslavia

    Bosnia and Herzogovnia were torn apart by fighting among Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. Peacekeeping missions were enforced by the UN
  • South Africa

    Apartheid ended in South Africa, and in 1994 South Africa held its first elections to allow all races to vote. Political and ethnic conflicts took place, but the ending of apartheid brought considerable unity.
  • Armenia and Azerbaijan

    Christians in Armenia battled with
    Muslims in neighboring Azerbaijan
  • Israeli/Palestinian conflict

    Violence came after the Israeli Prime Minister was assassinated. President Clinton tried to push for peace later.
  • War in Kosovo

    90 percent of Kosovo’s residents were Albanian. Some Kosovars
    began to demand independence; thus, Milosevic’s troops
    killed thousands of Kosovar Albanians and forced thousands
    more to leave their homes.
