fugitive slave act
Slaves accused of being fugitives chould be held without a warrent and they had no right to a jury trial. Instead a fed. commissioner ruled on each case. The north ruled for this as most abolitionist lived there and they wanted slavery to end. The south was different as they wanted their runaways back. -
Compromise of 1850
The compromise of 1850 said that California which was half on the Slave and half on the non-Slave line. The Califonia territory was split in half top half non-slave, bottom was slave. This was a compromise for the north and south as neither got exactly what they wanted. -
Uncle Tom's cabin
Uncle Tom's Cabin was a book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It was against slavery and was vouched for by the north. The southerners disliked the book as it gave them a bad name. -
Kansas-Nebraska act
The kansas-nebraska act created the terrotories of Kansas and Nebraska and opened new lands and repealed teh missouri compromise of 1820. It let settlers choose slave or non-slave. The south did eventually let this happen as both north and south sent people to go and vote for them. -
Bleeding Kansas
Bleeding Kansas was a series of violent and bloody events involving anti-slavery action. This was due to whether or not Kansas should come in as a slave state. The north was appalled that this could happen. The south cheered them on. -
Formation of the republican party
THe Republican Party reformed and was both an anti-slavery and sectional party that waned to protect the Northern views. The republicans grew quickly in the north and they blalmed bleeding kansas on the democrats. -
Atack on Harper's ferry
John Brown who had murdered proslavery Kansans before wanted to provoke a attack. To do this he planned to capture teh weapons in the U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Va. Brown rallied 18 men and they were caught and convicted. -

Secession
The southern states said if Lincoln won the presidency they would secede from the United States. They argued on states rights and felt the government could not interfere. South Carolina was the first to secede and was followed to create the Confederate states of America. The U.S. said this was unconstitutional and that they did not have a right to do it. They failed to compromise on what to do and ended in the beginings of a civil war. -
