Top 20 technologies
-
Charles Ginsburg invented the first video tape recorder
The video tape recorder is an important technology invention. Without this, DVDs would not have evolved from this. -
The first computer hard disk used
-
The audio cassette invented
-
The compact disk invented by James Russell
The compact disk was the start to a time with great love for music. It was a very influencial invention. -
The first computer with integrated circuits was made
Before integrated circuits, vacuum tubes or transistors were used. Vacuum tubes were very ineffective because they were bulky and like light bulb caused heat and burnt out constantly. Transistors had a problem known as the tyranny of numbers. There were too many circuits made by hand and many of them failed. If they did work, the circuits were often very long which caused it to take a long time to complete the circuit. -
The ARPAnet was inveneted
The arpanet was the first internet. It protected the flow of information between military installations by creating a network of geographically separated computers that could exchange information via a newly developed protocol called NCP. This was the grandfather to the internet. -
VCR or videocassette invented
-
The liquid-crystal display (LCD) invented
invented by James Fergason, LCDs have electricity applied to the solution and causes the crystals to align in patterns. Each crystal, therefore is either opaque or transparent, forming the numbers or text that we can read. -
Web-based e-mail invented
Ray Tomlinson invented internet based email in late 1971. E-mail is the ability to send simple messages to another person across the network. Ray Tomlinson chose the @ symbol to tell which user was "at" what computer. The @ goes inbetween the user's login name and the name of his/her host computer. -
The ethernet was invented
The ethernet was the next step in developing the internet. The ethernet was a local computer network. -
First call on a portable cell phone
Dr Martin Cooper, a former general manager for the systems division at Motorola, made the first call on a portable cell phone in April 1973. The call was to Joel Engel, Bell Labs head of research -
Walkman invented
The walkman was a way to listen to a CD anywhere. This device was the starting to new technology such as ipods, mp3 players, etc. -
Apple Lisa released
The Lisa was the first personal computer to use a GUI (a graphical user interface to a computer) and included a drop-down menu bar, windows, multiple tasking, a hierarchal file system, the ability to copy and paste, icons, folders and a mouse -
the CD-ROM invented
-
Windows created.
Microsoft Windows, a next-generation operating system that would provide a graphical user interface and a multitasking environment for IBM computers was announced by Microsoft Corporation in 1983. By 1985 there were two new competitors. Windows was shipped out almost two years after the initial release date on November 20, 1985 -
Degital cell phone invented
Using digital service, a method of encoding information using a binary code of 0s and 1s, rather than analog service, a method of modulating radio signals so that they can carry information such as voice or data, is beneficial because analog service is like an FM radio, there is a limit to the number of channels that can be used. Digital service voice signal is converted into binary code and transmitted as a series of on and off transmissions -
The World Wide Web and HTML is invented
HTML is the authoring language used to create documents on the World Wide Web -
DVD invented
The DVD (Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc) is a much more efficient way to watch movies. DVDs are much smaller and faster than previous means of movie-watching. Also, DVDs are easier to navigate throughout the movie. -
Apple iPod announced
On October 23, 2001, Apple Computers publicly announced their portable music digital player the iPod under project codename Dulcimer. -
YouTube invented
[First YouTube video ever posted](www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNQXAC9IVRw) YouTube was invented in 2005 by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim. It was named Time Magazines Invention of the year in 2006. The very first video posted was called "me at the zoo" and it lasted 19 seconds. -
