35. Monroe & John Quincy Adams Administrations

  • Election of 1816

    In the Election of 1816, James Monroe was elected President. His presidency was known as The Era of Good Feelings.
  • Florida acquired

    Florida was acquired as a state from Spain under the Adams - Onis Treaty of 1819. In return, the US acknowledged Spanish soverignty over Texas.
  • Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise was signed, which declared that Missouri was a slave state. It also prohibited slavery north of Missouri's southern border and admitted Maine as a free state.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    The Monroe Doctrine declared that European countries couldn't further colonize the U.S.
  • Election of 1824

    In the Election of 1824, no candidate received a majority of electoral votes. John Quincy Adams was elected by Congress to be President.
  • Tariff Act of 1824

    The Tariff Act of 1824 was promoted by Henry Clay and was designed to protect American industry by taxing imported goods.
  • The Tariff Act of 1828

    The Tariff Act of 1828, or "The Tariff of Abominations" was enacted to protect industry in the North. It ended up hurting the Southern economy and in South Carolina, it was deemed unconstitutional, which started what would later be known as The Nullification Crisis.
