Annie Etheridge, a Union nurse, recieves the Kerney Cross, a decoration of bravery for enlisted men. -

Dr. Mary Walker, a Civil War surgeon, is awarded the Medal of Honor by President Andrew Johnson. -

Women Marines
Mrs. Opha Johnson becomes the first woman Marine. -
WAC
Women's Army Auxilliary Corps established, but didn't offer full military status to women. Over 200,000 women served in WWII. -
Korean War
Over 120,000 women served active duty. They were nurses and many also served as support units in nearby countries. -
Vietnam War
More than 500 WACs, women Marines, and over 600 women in the Air Force served as soldiers in Vietnam. Over 6,000 Army, Navy, and Air Force nurses and medical specialists also served. -
Desert Storm
Largest female deployment in U.S. history. Over 40,000 women served in key combat support roles. Did everything male troops did except engage in ground combat. -
Peacekeeping
Over 1200 women deployed to Haiti for peacekeeping duties. -
Iraq and Afghanistan 2002-2009
Over 170,000 women have been deployed to the middle east. Account for more than 15% of active duty soldiers.
