The affect was very depressing because, he spent all of those long years in the plantation, ruling the people, and then everyone leaves him. He probably thought that everyone was leaving the plantation and also leaving the faith of Puritanism. -

Maybe because she actually thought they were good people, or because she respected them and did what they wanted her to do, then maybe they could let her go and gain her freedom.
