    The 18th Amendment

    On December 18, 1917 the 18th amendment was proposed. This would cause all production and distribution of alcohol to be illegal. But wasn't put into action until January 16, 1919.

    The Rise of the Mafia

    Due to the ban of alcohol, The mafia took advantage of this creating a black market for alcohol. This caused people to create speakeasies.
  • Alcoholism rate

    Due to people not being able to buy alcohol easily, some people decide to make it them selves. This caused people to ingest liquor with an unknown concentration of alcohol causing many people to die.
  • The Realization

    In 1925, journalist Henry Mencken realized that banning alcohol wasn't working as planned. It was only impacting the poor working families. The rich still had easy access to alcohol as they would often times have wine cellars.
  • Crime Rate Peaks

    In 1927, the rate of crime hits is peak. The amount of homicides increase almost 13%. While that happened organised crime is increasing at an alarming rate.
  • The Effect

    Once the 21st amendment started taking effect the crime rate went down by 13%. It caused many people to be mad that alcohol was legal again and some states didn't use legalize it untill 1966.

    Because of how bad the 18th amendment made america, on Febuary 20th, 1933 the 21st amendment was proposed to abolish the the 18th.
  • Ratification of the 21st amendment

    On December 5th, 1933 the amendment gets ratified and and the 18th amendment is no longer active. Although the amendment has been passed it was not fully implemented until late 1966.

    The amendment had some issues. Lots of states did accept it. It took 33 years for the amendment to take full effect

    The Amendment wasn't fully excepted until 1966. Utah didn't accept the amendment for time. The reason that they didn't is because of the large religious beliefs but eventually they accepted the amendment.
