    Battle of the Somme
    In 1916, the Allies devised a plan to launch multiple simultaneous attacks on all fronts. These being the Western, Eastern and the Italian. The plan was put in jeopardy when Germans slaughtered French troops in Verdum.

    The result of the battle was a slaughter, one of the bloodiest battles. The 57,000 British soldiers were killed at the end of this one day. The first Newfoundland regiment lost two thirds of their strength after only one hour.

    The Canadians tried to take Hill 145 on Vimy Ridge.
    The Canadians managed to take Hill 145 by April 10th. When the Germans saw this, they retreated.
    By April 12th, Vimy Ridge was successfully captured by the Candian forces.

    Passchendaele

    The objective of the batlle of Passchendaele was to break through German defenses and then take control over the Belgian Channel Ports.
    The battle took place between July and November - the Canadians didn't arrive until October. By this time, the British had suffered over 100,000 casualties and gained almost no ground.

    When the Candian troops arrived in early October, they found a wasteland where artillary had left the area in a deep, yellowish mud. On October 26th, the Candian Corps began a two-pronged attack after being split up by the Ravebeek Valley. They captured some of Bellevue Spur (North Ridge). The other part of the attack forces moved 700 meters closer to Passchendaele Village.
    By November 6th, Passchendaele was captured by the Canadian forces.

    Hundred Days Offensive

    After a week of fighting, the Candians were able to break through the front line of the Hindenburg line.
    One the main objectives now was Canal du Noid, where Sir Arthur Currie had a daring plan. On November 27th, he unleashed a day of heavy bombardment to the German troops. The Canal du Noid was captured.
    At that time, Canadian Coprs continued to capture Combrai and the Mons. This caused Germany to surrender on November 11th, 1918.
    Total casualities: 1,855,369.

    Prior to the offense, Germany had been attacking Western front.
    Preoccupied with territory after Russia left war, French Marshal Ferdinand Foch, decided it was time for the Allies to push back.
    The British decided to start at Amiens and beat the Germans back. The Candians first mission was to take the lead role in the attack at Amiens. They broke through the German lines and brought tanks to fire at them.

    During WW1, Canada proved itself as a truly independant and sovereign nation. In the battle of the Somme, the Candian soldiers showed that they were a strong and efficient fighting forces. Even if they were only a fraction of the British and fRench armies. At Vimy and Passchendaele, Canada did quickly what other countries failed to do in months. Our Canadian soldiers helped establish our independance from Britain as a country and not a colony.

    A turning point for Russia was the 1917 russian revoulution which pretty much put and end to Russia in the war.
    For france it would be the Mutinies of 1917 on the western front in northern france.
    One of Germany's turning points was when they defeated Russia in the Battle of Tannenberg.
    A turning point for Austria-Hungary would be when Italy declaired war on them.
    A turning point for Britain could be the Battle at Ypres.

    The Treaty of Versailles was supposed to be an agreement of peace the Allied Powers and the Central Powers. The Treaty was signed, though it didn't hold the effects. The peace was a small-short time things that people did not expect to last. Germany didn't want to accept the terms and conditions, and there more disagreeements.
