Adeline's first day of school
On a Monday morning, Adeline was sent to her school, Sacred Heart(Sheng Xin) by the cook because nobody was assigned to send her there. After school, nobody csme to pick her up and she was asked to enter a resturant. There she saw a telephone and called her home number. Her father who picked it up went to take her home. -
Adeline's friend
Adeline started to grow close to a rich athletic gir by the name of Wu Chun-mei and they became really close friends. -
Adeline was scolded by Niang
As little sister lived with Aunt Baba and Ye Ye, she could converse in Mandarin with a strong Tianjin accent so she did not recognise her biological mother, Niang. Little sister resisted when Niang held her which made Niang very angry. When Niang slapped little sister's face, Adeline defended the baby and was given a harsh warning by Niang. -
Niang was eavesdropping
The clothes given to the five children were not as great as those given to Niang's two younger children. Father's children were angry and started complaining about how unfair Niang was and Miss Chien too. When third brother opened the door, he saw Niang eavesdropping. Since that incident, big sister started to grow closer to Niang and the other four siblings did not trust her anymore. -
Adeline's pet
Adeline received a pet duckling from Mr and Mrs Huang and named it PLT(Precious LIttle Treasure). -
PLT's death
PLT was used to test Jackie's obedience. However, things turned out to be bad when Jackie pounced on PLT and hurt the bird. The next day, PLT died. Adeline buried PLT under the magnolia tree in the garden. -
Big sister's wedding
When big sister was 17 years old, she married Samuel, someone she has not even met, who was 31 years old. It was Niang's idea to have this arranged marriage. -
Adeline goes to Wu Chun-mei's birthday party.
Adeline went to Wu Chun-mei's party. After Niang found out that Adeline had sneaked out to go to Wu Chun-mei's birthday party, she ended up receiving a scolding from Niang. When Father heard about Aunt Baba giving Adeline money, he whipped her and separated Aunt Baba and Adeline. -
Adeline's speech
Chen Lei-Lei, Adeline's chief rival had distributed goodies to the whole class so they would elect her as class president. Adeline gave a speech to elect Wu Chun-mei as class president. However, when she left, the well-known Wu Chun-mei persuaded everyone to elect Adeline as class president. -
Adeline's tell-off
In the end, Adeline was nominated as class president. When her friends came to congratulate her at her house, Adeline was told off by Niang. -
Adeline was sent to an orphanage
After being told off, Niang and her father sent Adeline to a Tianjin orphanage to stay in. -
Adeline was the only student left
Many of the girls in her school started leaving as the communists started coming, and she was the only student left. -
Adeline goes to Hong Kong
Aunt Reine Schilling, Niang's older sister heard that Adeline was in Tianjin and decided to bring her to Hong Kong next week. This was because Ye Ye, Adeline's younger brother, sister and parents fled to Hong Kong three months ago. -

The Schillings left Hong Kong to go to Geneva. -

Adeline was sent to Sacred Heart as a boarder. -
Adeline's summer
During this time, Adeline entered an International play-writing competition. She titled it Gone With The Locusts. She constantly wrote to her father to allow her to study in a university in England like third brother. Yet, he never replied. -
Ye Ye's death
During school hours, a chaffeur picked Adeline and sent her to Ye Ye's funeral. Meeting up with her family, Niang had told Adeline to find a job to support herself. -
Adeline wins
In the end, Adeline won the play-writing competition and brought honour to China and her father. Her father knew of this news because it was published on the newspaper. -
Adeline goes to university
Adeline had badly wanted to go university so any chance given, she would take. After winning the play-writing competition, Adeline's father saw potential in her and allowed her to study medicine in a university in England. And still yearns for her parents' acceptance.
