The title of the first camera phone goes to three contenders: Sony, Sharp and Kyocera. It is said that Philippe Kahn is credited with conserving the idea of a camera phone. When his wife went into labor he had 3 technologies to "jury-rig" together to take a picture of his first born daughter. In the moment he combined a hand camera, personal laptop and his flipphone to snap a picture that he shared with 2000 people. Within a year the technologies were combined and sold in November 2000. -
iPod Classic
The iPod classic revolutionized the music industry and started a new era of digital consumer electronics. There simply was no music device like it! With is sleek hand-held design and centralized digital music software, the iPod classic set the standard for every music device. With the creation of iTunes the iPod made UL/DL music more trustworthy and easier to buy new music. It's portability and clean look was a massive hit that only seemed to get better with each drop. -
Centibots - DARPA
The robotics industry has been evolving for centauries. That is why I picked Centibots as a starting point. The bots use lasers and ultra sound to see the world and wirelessly communicate with other bots the data it interprets. The purpose for these bots is to perform like a hive of robots, to collaborate as a swarm to perform a specific task. Today they can be found in warehouses to move product around warehouses like Kroger and Amazon. -
Skype
Skype started in 2003 first as a PC to PC voice calling. In 2005 it was acquired by eBay and started to focus on streaming video with little success. For over a decade progress was slow, leading to eBay bailing and Microsoft buying the company. Now the platform has played pivotal role during the 2020 Pandemic. -
Facebook - Social Media
2004 is when Facebook went live. This technology has had the most impact on society by far. Facebook specifically started as a university site to rate females. Now it is used to find jobs or furniture within your neighborhood. The impact all social media sites have had on our daily lives cannot be explained in 500 words.
