Proclamation of Neutrality
During this time, the European countries France and Great Britain were in a war. George Washington tried to keep the U.S. neutral with the Proclamation of Neutrality but that was not the case. The British started impressing U.S. soldiers and preventing their trade with France. That was the end of the Proclamation of Neutrality.

Louisiana Purchase
Before the Louisiana Purchase was made, most of the land west of the U.S. was empty. Thomas Jefferson decided to buy it from France (even though that's not one of the powers of the presidents) for 3 cents an acre. By 1803, America had doubled in size. Then President Jefferson sent the two famous explorers, Lewis and Clark, to go inspect the new territory.

Tariff of Abominations
President John Quincy Adams began taxing foreign goods in order to protect the northern industries from competition in the year 1828. These taxed items became more expensive as America didn't have all of the same industries as other countries. The southern states had to pay more for manufactured goods and lost money on their raw materials because other countries didn't buy as much from them.

The Trail of Tears
Native Americans had lived in the U.S. before the settlers but with so many people coming from Europe they were constantly moving. Andrew Jackson passed the IRA in 1830 which meant that all American Indians had to leave. The American settlers gained land but they hurt their relationship with the N. A. The Cherokee people suffered the most and it was called the Trail of Tears because of the brutal treatment they were given.
