Leading up to the battle
A Confederate force under the command of General Beauregard was stationed 25 miles from Washington D.C. at Masnassas Junction. People were calling for action, but Union General Irvin McDowell knew his army was not ready yet for battle. Lincoln encouraged him to strike against the Confederates. -
Battle of Bull Run starts
The Union army marched from Washington against the Confederate Army that was drawn up behind Bull Run. -
First casualties
General McDowell crossed Sudley Ford and attacked the Confederate left flank near Manasses, Virginia. -
Battle continues
(Late Afternoon). Confederate reinforcements extended and broke the Union right flank at Shenendoah Valley. -
Battle ends
Defeated Union army went back to the safety of Washington after the battle was over. -
Aftermath
As a result from this battle, Lincoln replaces General McDowell with General George B. McClellan because he wanted the army to have more organization.
