The New Madrid fault runs along most if the Mississippi river valley. The earthquakes began on December 12, 1811 and last on and off for nearly a year. The final earthquake occurred on February 7, 1812 and had an estimated magnitude of 7.4 -8.3, it was strong enough to reverse the course of the Mississippi river for a short period of time. -
War of 1812
On June 18, 1812 the US formally declared war on Great Britain. On August 13, the first battle occurred at sea with the USS Essex capturing the British ship Alert. The war lasted from June 18, 1812 to February 18, 1815. -

James Monroe was inaugurated as the 5th president of the US. His term lasted from 1817 to 1825. His major achievement as president is the enforcement of the Monroe doctrine. -
The Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise was a compromise made to keep the union from tipping in the favor of slavery. The compromise involved Missouri entering the union as a slave state, and Maine entering as a free state therefore balancing the scales in the union. William Henry Harrison was elected the 9 president of the US on March 4, 1841. He went down in the record book when he died just 30 days after his inauguration on April 4th, 1841. The cause of his death was a serious case of typhoid fever.
