    The New Madrid fault runs along most if the Mississippi river valley. The earthquakes began on December 12, 1811 and last on and off for nearly a year. The final earthquake occurred on February 7, 1812 and had an estimated magnitude of 7.4 -8.3, it was strong enough to reverse the course of the Mississippi river for a short period of time.
