1990's Timeline

  • Passage of the American's With Disabillities Act

    ADA was put into action to end discrimination agains people with disabillities in the United States. It allowed all disabled children the righ to attend school just like every other American. Public transportation and places had to accomodate for disabled people as well. Before the ADA, people with disabillities were the most discrimintated against minority. The American's With Disabillities Act created a more equal nation for the disabled.
  • Confirmation of Clarance Thomas

    President Bush nominated Clarance Thomas for Supreme Court of the United States. Even from the beggining Thomas was not liked by many civil rights groups. When the nomination reached the Senate his reputation became even worse. Anita Hill, a law professor, accused Clarance Thomas of sexual harassment. In the end though Thomas was voted in as associate justove of the Supreme Court.
  • Jeffery Dahmer

    Jeffery Dahmer murdered 17 men in his 13 year streak. He was an alcoholic and wouldusually get his victums drunk. Dahmer was arrested after two cops dearched his house and found photos of dismembered people. His trial began on January 13, 1992. He pleaded not guilty, and then guilty to virtue of insanity. The jury came to a conclusion of guilty on February 17, 1992 of guilty and sane. Dahmer was sentenced to 15 consecutive years in jail,but was killed by a fellow inmate in 1994.
  • US Soldiers in Somalia / Blackhawk Down

    Initially US soldiers were sent to Somalia to feed the people who were starving because of the civil war, by George Bush. On October 3rd two teams were sent to arrest two leutenants of Muhammad Aidid. After the teams arrested the targets, two helicopters were shot down, 18 US solderis were killed. Mark Bowden, a reporter, wrote an article about these events, then a book, and finally a movie was produced. The movie Blackhawk Down gave the series of unfortunate event, in Somalia, it's name.
  • Passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement

    NAFTA was signed in by President Bill Clinton, he wantes nations to feel more free to trade with all other nations. The law allowed the United States, Cananda, and Mexico to trade with each other almost completely free of teriffs. It created the worlds larges free trade zone. Many people feered that it would cause big buisnesses to move to Mexico because pruduction would be cheaper. On the other hand it benifited small buisnesses the most because it made trade cheaper so they oculd expand.
  • OJ Simpson Murder Case

    OJ Simpson, a former NFL player, was tried in California for the murder of his ex-wife and waiter. It was one of the most publicized trials in US history. Simpson hired a very skilful and large team of lawyers to help him win the case. In the end OJ was found not guilty.
  • Million Man March

    The Million Man March, led by Minister Louis Farrakhan, was a demonstartion in Washington D.C. that included about a million African American men. The men were protesting their right of justice and to promote African American unity. Farrakhan was also the leader of Nation of Islam, and often controversial.
  • Explosion of TWA Flight 800

    TWA Flight 800 left JFK airport, headed for PAris. Twelve minutes into the flight, the plain misteriously exploded, none of the 230 passangers survived. Nobody knows for sure why the plain crashed but many suspected it was terrorism. NTSB also said it could have been a spark in the fuel tank. The crash became one of the most investigated events in America, and the world still may never know what really happened on that flight.
  • NATO Bombing of Yugoslavia

    NATO bombed Yugoslavia to stop the Serbians and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. There were many human rights violations in Kusovo that pushed NATO. 2,000 civilians were killed and 200,000 Serbians had to leave there homes in Kusovo. This bombing is very controversial even today because of the damage NATO did on Kusovo. Yugoslavia is still trying to spring back.
  • Y2K Scare

    The Y2K bug, or Year 2000 Bug, was a glitch reported to wreak havoc on computer systems. Computers would recognize two digit year codes like "62" as "1962" but it was predicted that computers would think "00" meant "1900" when it was really almost 2000. People began to belive that computerized systems would fail and the US would go into chaos. But it wasn't just a US problem, Britian was also looking for the solution.
