1990's

  • World Wide Web

    Invented in 1990 by Tim Berners-Lee, a computer scientist working at CERN. It is the information system that enables content sharing over the internet.
  • Linux OS

    Invented by Linus Torvalds after using Unix and not liking how their proprietary licensing stopped users from modifying the software. He then worked with the GNU project to make an open source operating system somewhat mocking them called 'Linux'.
  • DVD (Digital Video/Versatile Disc)

    These discs allowed any kind of digital data to be stored and came with more available space than traditional CDs. You could also continue to read, write, and erase certain DVDs over and over again.
  • Java Programming Language

    James Gosling is credited with designing Java in 1995. It is a high-level programming language that is designed to have few dependencies. That means that any system that can understand Java doesn't have to recompile the code to run.
  • Wi-Fi (802.11)

    Wireless network protocols that allows nearby digital devices to exchange data via radio waves. Allowed people to access the internet on the go.
