    Before going to work, Winston Smith has the urge to start a diary even though it is illegal. He does not know who will come across the diary, but out of the view of his telescreen, he begins to write what is on his mind so that maybe one day the person who finds it will understand his life.

    At the "2 Minutes Hate" at work, Winston sees O'Brien and Julia. He suspects Julia to be apart of the Thought Police and begins to act very hostile around her. However with O'Brien, after they make eye contact, Winston feels an connection to him and assumes that O'Brien also doesn't agree with ways of the Party.

    At work, Julia secretly gives Winston a note that says "I love you". This causes Winston to become very interested in Julia and can't wait to meet and talk to her (which he had never even done before)

    When in the prole area of town (proles are the lower class), Winston goes into a artifact shop and meets Mr. Charrington, who has a room above his shop that Winston asks to rent. Due to the fact that the room has no telescreen, Winston feels safe bringing Julia there frequently. Together they talk about the corruption in the party and make love.

    Winston and Julia meet O'Brien
    O'Brien invites Julia and Winston to his house where O'Brien reveals that he is part of the Brotherhood (an organization against the Party). Winston and Julia both demand entry into the entry and O'Brien agrees. They devise a plan that would allow Winston to get his hands on Goldstein's book, The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism, which is mandatory for a member of the Brotherhood to read (Goldstein is the head of the Brotherhood).

    A few days after meeting with O'Brien, Winston receives a briefcase with Goldstein's book from another secret member of the Brotherhood.

    6 days after receiving Goldstein's book, Winston finally feels safe enough to start reading the book. With Julia by his side in the rented room, Winston starts to read the book all night.

    Winston and Julia get caught by the Thought Police
    The morning after reading the book, the couple get surrounded by the Thought Police. They don't understand how they got found, but Mr. Charrington reveals himself to be part of the Thought Police and there was a telescreen in the room, hidden behind a painting. The couple gets knocked unconscious, separated, and taken to the Ministry of Love.

    Torture in the Ministry of Love
    Winston wakes up in a jail cell and is welcomed by O'Brien who turns out to be a double agent and he only faked to be apart of the Brotherhood. O'Brien takes Winston to "Room 101" where he is tortured for months, maybe even years. During this time, Winston confesses to every crime, some which he didn't even commit. His final torture was him betraying Julia by stop loving her and transferring the torture onto her.

    Winston's Death
    After Winston is released back into the public he finds himself in a cafe. He hears on the telescreen that Oceania won a battle against Eastasia and is truly happy. He realizes that now he truly loves Big Brother and this was the goal of the party. Because he loves Big Brother, he finds himself back in the Ministry of Love being shot in the back of the head (so that he dies living BB).
