    Counterculture and anti-Vietnam War groups came to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago to protest against the Vietnam War and in favor of peace. Police brutally attacked protestors and over 100 protestors were sent to the hostpital and 200 were arrested.

    During the medal ceremony, two African American athletes, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, each raised a black gloved fist during the National Anthem as a human rights salute. Both of them used clothing to represent different disriminations against minorities. All three athletes wore Olympic Project for Human Rights badges to represent those thrown off the side of the boats in the Middle Passage.
