1960s Technology Timeline

  • Weather Satellite

    Weather Satellite
The weather satellite was invented by NASA in 1960. The first weather satellite to orbit the Earth and was able to transmit information about the conditions in the atmosphere back to the ground on Earth. This was so groundbreaking because it allowed meteorologists to gather information from space about the weather conditions in present time.
  • A light-emitting diode (LED)

    A light-emitting diode (LED)
LEDs were invented by Nick Holonyak Jr. This was the first visible LED and is a result of the discovery of electroluminescence, a phenomenon where semiconductors produce light when electrons move through them. Holonyak used gallium arsenide phosphide as a substrate. Later researchers were able to further this finding to develop brighter and different colored LEDs.
  • Cassette tape

    Cassette tape
The cassette tape was invented 1963 by Lou Ottens. This invention changed the way people listened to music as it allowed them to listen on portable devices. They were also fairly inexpensive, making them commonly accessible to most.
  • Handheld Calculator

    Handheld Calculator
Invented by Texas Instruments in 1967, the handheld calculator ran on batteries and performed basic math functions. This was a big deal also given that the calculator had a memory function.
  • 911 Call

    911 Call
Invented by AT&T, the 911 call was created to be used in cases of emergency and to connect people to various emergency services. The 911 call is now used by almost every country in the world.
