1960 and Public Protest

  • The first child

    A six year old Ruby Bridges is the first to be integrated into an all white school as a black student.
  • The beginning

    One of the first events in the 60's to gain attention was 4 Black college students. They refused to leave an all white church. They said they were inspired by Gandhi and wanted equal rights.
  • The Freedom Riders

    These people took trips to protest the segregation. They used "all white" things, such as restrooms water fountains and more.
  • March on Washingtion

    Around 250,00 people march on Washington to show how much they want rights and freedom. Martin Luther King then gives his "I have a Dream" speach
  • The Standoff

    A governor named George Wallace, refused to let black students register at the university of Alabama. This went on until the National Guard was sent.
  • The bombing

    A church was bombed, this was a part of a protest and this provoked the nation.
  • Civil Rights

    The Civil Rights Act was put into place. This stated you can discriminate against employees due to race, sex, color, religion or National Origin. This upset many.
  • Malcolm X

    Malcolm X was an activist. He was very popular and often invoked violent protest. He was assassinated on this day.
  • Fair Housing Act

    This was an act passed stating that you must provided equal housing opportunity fro everyone regardless of race, religion or National Origin.
  • Martin Luther King Jr.

    Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in his hotel room in Memphis Tennessee.
