The era of McCarthyism begins
• The era of McCarthyism begins at 1950-1954.
• 1950: February 9th, Wheeling, West Virginia, McCarthy delivers a speech and displays a list of 205 Communists sympathizers in the State Department. He wins national headlines.
• 1954: April 22nd, Televised Army-McCarthy trials begin.
• 1954: Senate votes to condemn McCarthy. He is stripped of his power as committee chair after 1954 elections. -

Fidel Castro comes to power in Cuba
• July 26th, 1953: Castro stages a rebellion and attacks Batista’s largest military outpost, the Moncada Barracks near Santiago. The revolt is unsuccessful and Castro is arrested.
• May, 1955: Castro is given amnesty and is released from prison. He is exiled into Mexico.
• 1955: Castro founds the July 26th of July Movement in Mexico.
• Jan 1, 1959: Batista flees as Castro’s rebels entered Havana. The following week a new government arrives as Castro arrives. He assumes the post of commander -
