Brown vs. Board of Education
United States Supreme Court case in which the court declared state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students unconstitutional Unanimous 9-0 decision -
NAACP
NAACP:
During this period, the Association represented civil rights workers and fought to implement Brown in numerous desegregation cases across the nation. Cases were filed that successfully challenged discrimination in public accommodations, housing, employment, voting. -
Sputnik
Harvard doctoral student Brent Maddin said that “Sputnik woke the nation up, serving as a “focusing event” that put a spotlight on a national problem; education.” A year after Sputnik, Congress implemented the National Defense Education Act. This act increased funding for education at all levels, including low-interest student loans to college students, with the focus on scientific and technical education. -
The United Federation of Teacheres (UTF)
The United Federation of teachers (UFT) is a labor union that represents most teachers in NYC public schools. This provides services to local affiliates in new york state; lobbies on the local state and federal level conducts research and organizes new members. This was in affect on November 7, 1960 -
Baby Boom Generation

Civil Rights Act of 1964
This act outlawed major forms of discrimination against racial, ethnic, national and religious minorities, and women. Also ended racial segregation in schools, at the workplace and by facilities that served the general public
