  • D-Day

    In Operation Overlord, the Allies went against German forces on the beaches of Normandy, France. The Allies were successful in the largest amphibious attack in history.
  • Truman Becomes President

  • V-E Day

    Shortly after Hitler died, Germany was conquered. They surrendered to the Allies, indicating the end of the war in Europe.
  • First Atomic Bomb Dropped

    As part of the Manhattan Project, the U.S. successfully dropped the first nuclear bomb, Trinity, in a New Mexico desert. J. Robert Oppenheimer is credited as the “father of the atomic bomb.”
  • Atomic Bombings in Japan

    The United States dropped two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They were called "Little Boy" and "Fat Man."
