Dunkirk
The Battle of Dunkirk was the defense and evacuation of British and other allied soldiers against the Germans. The Germans pushed the Allies against the coast of France (Dunkirk) and had them surrounded. The German air force bombed ships, and they shot down English planes to prevent the rescue of the over 400,000 men. The rescue lasted from 05/26/1940 till 06/04/1940. -
The Blitz
After Germany's Luftwaffe and the English Royal Air Force battled for air superiority, Germany suffered a large loss. Their rebuttal was the Blitz (Sep 7, 1940- May 10, 1941). The Blitz was a German offensive bombings against England. Mass air attacks bombed London for 56 nights; London was bombed the most of all the English cities. Over 40,000 civilians were killed, and one million homes were destroyed in the bombings. -
The Military Draft
All men ages 21-45 were required to sign up for the peacetime draft. If you were drawn you were required to serve at least one year in the armed forces. People believed America would eventually be drawn into the war, so they encouraged the draft. 50 million men between eighteen and 25 registered and 10 million had been inducted. -

White Rose
A group of students and a professor from the University of Munich created a non-violent resistance group against the Nazi regime. The group used leaflets and graffiti to help influence the spirit of German people. They knew military force was the only way to end the Nazi denomination and influencing the citizens was the best way to start gaining support. -
Operation Husky
Operation Husky was the offensive move to gain the Island of Sicily from Italy. The Allies drove Axis military forces from the island to gain control. This opened the Mediterranean sea lanes were opened for Allies' ships for the first time since 1941. The operation lasted from July 9 till August 17, 1943 -

Kamikazes
Kamikazes were military aviators who took part in suicide attacks for Japan. These attacks were taken out by pilot-guided explosives missels. Japan thought that crashing their planes into our ships and exploding them would diminish our navy. The Japanese thought this was a high and noble reason, and many would train to become Kamikazes. -

Cold War
The Cold War lasted from 1947-1991 according to some historians. The Cold War was caused by tension between the Soviet Union and the United States. The US pledged to help any country threatened by soviet expansion. The creation of NATO helped the war remain “cold”. The war also caused a panic amoung citizens called the red scare. -
The Red Scare
The Red Scare lasted from 1947 till 1957. Peoples' fear of communists began to grow as the cold war got more intense. People spread propaganda about communists, and they began to turn in communist sympathizers. Thousands of people lost their homes, jobs, family, and friends because of this. The American people were mostly afraid of Soviet Spies threatening US security. -
