  • Al Capone is convicted for tax evasion

    Al Capone was an infamous crime boss during Prohibition. He committed many crimes but there was never enough evidence to prove it until he did not pay his taxes. He went to trial and since they knew he had committed other crimes they gave him 11 years in jail. That sentence is the longest sentence ever given to a tax evader
  • Scientists split the atom

    John Cockcroft and Ernest Walton split the atom with a machine that produced protons and accelerate them through 300,000 volts at lithium atoms.
  • Amelia Earhart completes a transatlantic flight by herself

    Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean by herself. She started in Newfoundland, Canada, and ended in Burry Port, Wales, England. The flight lasted 20 hours and 40 minutes.
  • Prohibition was repealed

    The 18th amendment which banned the sale of buying, of selling of, and importing of alcohol was repealed. Many people did not follow this law and went to illegal speakeasies where they had alcohol. They also made their own alcohol called moonshine.
  • Dust Bowl

    The Dust Bowl were dust storms in the southern plains region (a map of the southern plains region is above this). These dust storms happened because many farmers plowed new farmland which caused the grass to get unrooted. Since it was unrooted the dirt was loose and could be carried by the wind. Usually, they would plant things in the soil and that would keep the dirt from getting blown away by the wind. Then then the Great Depression started and nobody would buy it so they did not plant it.
  • The Social Security Act was passed

    The Social Security Act provided money to retired workers based on how much they earned when they were working and is still in place today.
  • The Hindenburg catches fire and crashes

    The Hindenburg catches fire and crashes
    Many people used zeppelin airships to travel long distances during the 30s. The Hindenburg was a zeppelin airship. The Hindenburg was filled with hydrogen to make them float but hydrogen is highly combustible. There was a hydrogen leak and it caught on fire and crashed in New Jersey. This was the end of commercial blimp flights.
  • World War 2 starts

    World War 2 starts when England and France declared war on Germany for invading Poland. Germany was gaining land before the war. They attacked Czechoslovakia and annexed Austria. England and France let this happen because they wanted to avoid war. But after they let him take Czechoslovakia and Austria they warned Germany not to invade another place. But Germany invaded Poland and World War 2 started.
