The Great Depression was happening during this time. A lot of recent immigrants had to return to their native lands, mostly because they were forced to. -

World war ll was going on. A few refugees fleeing the Nazis arrived in America but most were turned away. -
Japanese Interment
In America, the Japenese were put into camps. Just like the Nazis put the Jews into camps but in America they didnt kill them. -
Displaced Persons Act
Congress answered with the Displaced Persons Act of 1948. They offered hundreds of thousands entry into the US. But millions more were left to look for refuge somewhere else. -
Refugees
The US took in 38,000 Hungarians, refugees from a failed fight against the Soviets. These people were among the first of the Cold War refugees. More women than men entered the country. They were reuniting with their families and joining their husbands. -

Hart-Cellar Act
In the early 1960s, immigration reforms were growing louder.
In 1965, Lyndon B Johnson signed the Hart-Cellar Act into law.
The quota system favoring Western Europe now has no use. It was replaced by one offering help to immigrants from all the continents and not just Western Europe. The face of America was truly about to change. -
