Alcohol Prohibition begins
Prohibition in America lasted from 1920 to 1933. Alcohol was banned by the 18th amendment. It prohibited any selling, transporting, and manufacturing of alcohol products in the u.s. This amendment was aimed at lowering crime rates, domestic abuse, and reduce social issues within America. The 18th amendment lead to speakeasy' s and illegal distribution of alcohol across boarders. -
19th amendment (women's suffrage)
The 19th amendment gave women suffrage, or the right to vote. It prohibited any U.S citizen from being denied the right to vote based on sex. Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were the original drafters of the 19th amendment. -
Sacco-Venzetti trial
Italian immigrants Bartolomeo Vanzetti and Nicola Sacco are convicted of murder and put to trial and then put to execution. This was all generally based on their political beliefs. This happened due to the fear of immigrants in the 20's. -
Calvin Coolidge becomes president
Warren G. Harding dies in office of a heart attack. Calvin Coolidge, being Vice President of Harding, takes over in office. Coolidge had served from August 2,1923 to March 4, 1939. -
Immigration act of 1924
The immigration act was a federal law passed that limited the number of immigrants who could be admitted to the U.S. The acts aught to establish a distinct American identity. The act controlled "undesirable" immigration by creating quotas, and keeping immigrants from certain national origins. -
The scopes trial
The scopes trial was an American legal case in which a highschool substitute teacher named John T. Scopes, was accused of violating the Tenessee's butler act that made it unlawful to teach human evolution. The trial was held at Dayton Tenessee. Scopes was found guilty and fined $100. The trial was commonly referred to as Tennessee v. Scopes. -
Charles Lindergh's first solo transatlantic flight
Charles Lindbergh completes the first transatlantic flight in the U.S. In 1927. The flight took him from New York to Paris in 33 hours. Lindbergh was then known as a national hero. -
The Kellogg-Briband pact
15 nations signed the Kellogg-bro and pact that was sought to "outlaw" war. The pact was known as an international agreement in which states promised to not use war to resolve their conflicts of whatever origin they may be. -
Hoover becomes president
In the election of 1928 Hoover becomes president. He ran on the slogan of "a chicken in every pot, a car in every garage". He was elected out of a landslide with Al Smith and maintained republican dominance in the White House. -
The Stock market crash of 1929
In October of 1929 the American stock market crashes, initiating the onset of the Great Depression. It was known as the most devastating stock market crash in the history of the U.S. The crash had left several people unemployed.
