From Demobilization to Association: The Reintegration of The Veterans
There was an operation to demobilize 5 million men. Contrary to their British and Italian counterparts the French authorities had not anticipated the operation. The order was determined by the time spent in the army. This measure did not meet expectations, and vandalism was commonly practiced. In the early 1919, about 13,000 broken windows and 400 damaged doors were reported monthly. Compared to mutinies of British soldiers, demobilization in the French army can be considered a smooth operation. -
The Treaty of Versailles is Signed
The Treaty of Versailles ended World War One. It imposed heavy reparations payments on Germany. On June 28, 1919, Germany and the Allied Nations (including Britain, France, Italy and Russia) signed the Treaty of Versailles, formally ending the war. (Versailles is a city in France, 10 miles outside of Paris.) -
The Washington Conference is Held
The United States called for the Washington Conference which was attended by Britain, France, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, China, Japan, and Portugal. The Conference resulted in a naval armaments treaty that set a ratio for over 10,000 tons of guns bigger than eight inches for Great Britain, the US, Japan, France, and Italy. -
French Occupation of Ruhr
Germany defaulted its reparations to France. So the French moved in to occupy the Ruhr. Ruhr was occupied because Germany failed to the second payment of 2 billion gold marks in 1922. (The Ruhr is an industrial area in Germany's Rhineland that borders France.) -
The Cartel des Gauches wins the French Election
The Cartel des Gauches was the government alliance between the Radical-Socialist Party and the socialist French Section of the Workers International after World War I. The alliance won two general elections, one led by Edouard Herriot and the other led by Gaston Doumergue. -
Locarno Treaties
In the year of 1925 an agreement called the, Locarno Treaties, defined Germany's western borders with France and Belgium as well with Britain and Italy as guarantors. -
The Great Depression
France struggled to recover from the devastation of World War 1 and had little success. Fluctuations in currency and lack of reparations from Germany caused the Depression. The number of tourist declined, industrial output fell, and nearly 40,000 jobs were lost every month. -
Leon Blum's Popular Front Government Comes to Power in France
The Popular Front instituted social legislation. It allowed wide public participation in the government, but overall failed to reduce the deteriorating economy. -
The Munich Pact is Signed
Britain and France appease Hitler by signing the Munich Pact. The Munich Pact grants Hitler control of the Czech Sudetenland. -
Britain and France Declare War on Germany
In response to Hitler's continued aggression in Europe, Britain and France go to war with Germany. Britain and France strive for an attempt to stop Hitler's offer for global leadership.The countries had sworn to defend Poland and sent ultimatums to Hitler demanding his withdrawal from Poland. Hitler declined the ultimatums and World War 2 began.
