    The Fires

While calculating the destruction, the earthquake took second place to the great fire that followed the quake. The fire (which lasted four days), was most likely started with broken gas lines.
In some instances the fire was helped along by people hoping to collect insurance for their property because under their insurance they were only covered for fire, but not earthquake damage.

Although the earthquake was impacted society negatively. The effect was quite a boost in a positive way for scientists. About eight months after the earthquake, predicting following natural disasters was made easier through more advanced monitoring and reduction of hazards.
