    Compromise of 1877
    Officially ended the Reconstruction era by drawing out all troops out of the South. Settled the very controversial election of 1876 between Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel J. Tilden.
  • Invention of Light Bulb

    Invention of Light Bulb
    Thomas Edison made a breakthrough in his trials and created the first electric source of light. Called, "Most important invention since light". Made for night time activities and longer days.

    Put a ban on all Chinese Labor immigrants. Was set to be in place for 10 whole years but was renewed for a longer sentence.

    A devastating bombing that took place in Chicago. Started off as a Laborer's rally, but turned bloody after police attacked several and killed one worker. This event led to panic across the country and anarchist movements to take form.

    The failure of the South Fork dam led to the destruction of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The result was over $17 million in property damage, and over 2,000 deaths.

    This year marked the start of a thirty year period of disenfranchisement of the African American community. This was caused from the aftermath of the civil war. Segregation would continue to gain popularity until the mid 20th century.

    What started as an industrial lockout strike, turned into a battle between the laborers and private security agents. The result was a weakening in unionism and no virtual changes to the steel mills pay or work qualities.

    A railroad strike that spread nationwide in order to stop the cuts in wages and achieve better workplace standards and value of life. This was a unsuccessful and resulted in a complete shutdown of railroads and no change in pay.
  • Spanish-American War

    War fought between Spain and America over the sinking of the USS Maine in Cuba. Cuba was seeking Independence from Spain and the ship was sent to aid the cause. The result of the war was an American victory, Cuba gaining independence from Spain, and the Treaty of Paris ending conflict between America and Spain.
