  • Sitting Bull Surrendered

    Sitting Bull and his followers surrendered to the US Army and agreed to move to reservations.

  • Garfield Assassinated

    Garfield died from an assassin's bullet and was replaced by Chester Arthur

  • Grover Cleveland Elected

    Democrat Grover Cleveland was elected President of the United States.

  • Haymarket Square Riot

    After workers were killed by the police breaking up a riot at the McCormick factory, a protest was planned a Haymarket Square. Radicals threw a bomb at police and the protest turned violent.

    Congress passed the Dawes General Allotment Act. Instead of moving tribes to communal areas, this act gave native families 160 acres each.
