    When John Wilkes Booth assassinated Lincoln at Fords Theater in 1965.
  • Ending of Slavery

    Slavery has officially ended as 250 000 slaves in Texas receive the news
  • The Civil Rights Act of 1866

    Many southerners reacted violently to the passage by Congress of the Civil Rights Act of 1866 and the two amendments. White supremacists in Tennessee formed the Ku Klux Klan, a secret organization meant to terrorize southern blacks and “keep them in their place.” Race Riots and Mass Murders of former slaves occurred in Memphis and New Orleans that same year.
  • White Terror(KKK)

    A prototype of the KKK was first started in 1966 in Tennessee. Known as the Louisiana Knights of the White Camellia.
    The Klansman acted terror on Prominent Republicans, White or Black. Especially active in South Carolina.
    Congress started using the enforcement act to strike back on black voters in order to protect them from the KKK.
    Later on the KKK act was put in place making the Klan activities outlawed.
    Started in 1866 still went on until the 1960's
  • Radical Reconstruction

    The congress that gathered in the years after were far more radical with their decisions then the previous ones.
  • Reconstructed South

    Their were freed slaves in the South that participated in the Union army who were provided many freedmen with training. Also there was a Tenure of Office Act which required the senate permission for the president to remove any officeholder whose appointment the Senate had confirmed, and also many other acts took place during this period.
  • The election of 1868

    During the 1868 election representing the republican party which got 214 electoral votes was Ulysses S Grant.
    While representing the democratic party was Horatio Seymour who only got 80 electoral votes.
    Grant won the election.
  • The Grant Years

    During Grants years as president he fixed financial issues within the country, and created all sorts of acts like the Public credit act of 1869 which endorsed paying back debt with gold and the refunding act of 1870 which stated that Treasury was to replace 6% Civil War bonds with a new bond specifying gold.
  • Conservative Resurgence

    In the upper south, the KKK had little impact. But in the Deep South, KKK `violence impacted political balance favored towards Democrats.
    Northerners interests in Civil rights eroded due to many factors.
    As well as many desperate economic circumstances created some new radical tensions.
  • Scandals

    Jay Could and Jay Fisk attempted to create public craze for gold.
    - The only danger to the scheme was the federal treasury's selling large amounts of gold.
    - Due to that the prices of gold went to craze.
    -On "Black Friday" grant ordered the treasury's to sell large amounts of gold in order to burst the bubble.
    There were many more scandals involving politicians.
  • Election of 1872

    Again in his re-election Grant won for the Radical Republican Party with the majority of the electoral votes.
  • Panic and Redemption

    The distress of the economy and gain in scandals explain the Norths loss in interest for reconstruction.
    The Panic of 1873 is when the railroad bonds were desegregated, Jay Cook and company went bankrupt.
    The blame was placed on the Radical Republicans
    That ended up being just the push that the Democrats needed since they got control of the House.
  • The Compromise of 1877

    Republicans nominated Rutherford Hayes
    Democrats nominated Samuel Tilden
    - Both candidates favored trend towards relaxing the federal authority.
    - But the two sides were unable to agree.
    Special electoral commission was established- Hayes was elected President.
    The compromise of 1877 was The Republicans promised if Hayes was elected they would withdraw the troops from Louisiana and South Carolina if the democrats promised to withdraw the opposition to Hayes.
  • The end of Reconstruction

    Republican government collapsed in Louisiana and South Carolina as Promised withing the Compromise of 1877. Protection of black civil rights crumbled due to pressure from white rule in the South and force of the Supreme Court narrowing down Reconstruction Amendments.
