    The assasination happened five days after confederate commander Robert E. Lee surrendered, ending the Civil War. The assination was done why John Wilkes Booth as part of a larger conspiracy in a bid to revive the Confederate cause.

    This ratification of the 13th amendment ended slavery. "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

    The Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution was passed by both houses on 8th June and the 13th June, 1866. The amendment was designed to grant citizenship to and protect the civil liberties of recently freed slaves.

    Also know as th "Civil Rights" Act of 1870 empowered the president with the legal authority to enforce the first section of the Fifteenth Amendment throughout the United States.

    Grant's secretary worked out a deal with British Rep. John Rose to create a commision of 12 men, six British and six American. The treaty included the settlement process for the Alabama Claims, settled disputed Atlantic fisheries and the San Juan Boundary.
