South Carolina Secedes from The Union
Charelston Convention in December passed the first ordinace of succession after a unanimous vote. Within six weeks six other deep south states followed. -
10 More States Succeed
After South Carolina succeeded in 1860, a year later ten more fallowed including: Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina. -
Confederate States of America Formed
The confederacy was a number of Southern slave states that had declared their secession from the United States. The Confederacy recognized as members eleven states that had formally declared secession, two additional states with less formal declarations, and one new territory. -
President of Confederacy
Jefferson Davis becomes president of the confederacy. He was chosen partly because he was a well-known and experienced moderate who had served in a president's cabinet. -
Conflisct At Fort Sumter
Ft. Sumter was located in the middle of the harbor of Charleston SC where the U.S. forts garrison had withdrawn to avoid incidents with local militias in the streets of the city. Northerners rallied behind Lincoln's call for all the states to send troops to recapture the forts and to preserve the Union. Begins war. -
First Battle at Bull Run
This battle was fought in Prince William County, Virginia, near the city of Manassas. It was the first major land battle of the American Civil War.Just months after the start of the war at Fort Sumter, the Northern public clamored for a march against the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia, which they expected to bring an early end to the rebellion. -
Second Battle at Bull Run
It was the culmination of an offensive campaign waged by Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia against Union Maj. Gen. On August 28, 1862, Jackson attacked a Union column just east of Gainesville, at Brawner's Farm, resulting in a stalemate. -
Emancipation Proclamation
Issued by Lincoln to all segments of the Executive Branch. It proclaimed all those enslaved in Confederate territory to be forever free, and was not issued by congress. -
Battle of Chancellorsville
This Battle was fought from April 30th to May 6th in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. Chancellorsville is known as Lee's "perfect battle" because his risky decision to divide his army in the presence of a much larger enemy force resulted in a significant Confederate victory. -
Battle of Gettysburg
Battle fought from the 1st through the 3rd ove july near the area of Gettysburg Pennsylvania. This battle had the largest number of casualties in the Civil War, and is often seen as the wars turning point. -
Lincoln Reelected
With Lincoln's by the northerners, any hope of a negotiation with the confederacy vanished. He beat Democrat George B. McClellan in the elcetion. At this time the Civil War was in its fourth year. -
Freedmen's Bureau Established
This federal government agency aided freed slaves during the Reconstruction era. This bureau was initiated by Lincoln as was desined to last one year after the Civil War. -
President Lincoln assasinated
The assasination happened five days after confederate commander Robert E. Lee surrendered, ending the Civil War. The assination was done why John Wilkes Booth as part of a larger conspiracy in a bid to revive the Confederate cause. -
13th Amendment Ratified
This ratification of the 13th amendment ended slavery. "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." -
Ku Klux Klan
The Klan has advocated extremist reactionary currents such as white supremacy, white nationalism, and anti-immigration, historically expressed through terrorism. Six wel educated confederates created the original Klan in 1865. -
14th Amendment Approved
The Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution was passed by both houses on 8th June and the 13th June, 1866. The amendment was designed to grant citizenship to and protect the civil liberties of recently freed slaves. -
"Reonstitution Acts"
As part of the ongoing process of reconstituion after the civil war congress passed four statutes beggining in July. the title was "An act to provide for the more efficient government of the Rebel States." Fulfillment of the requirements of the Acts were necessary for the former Confederate States to be readmitted to the Union. -
Ulysses S. Grant Elected President
This is the first presidential election aftert he Civil war. Ulysses S. Grant is a republican candidate with running mate Schuyler Colfax, beating democratic candidate Horatio Seymour. -
15th Amendment
This amendment gave African men the right to vote, declaring "right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude." -
"Enforcement Acts" Passed
Also know as th "Civil Rights" Act of 1870 empowered the president with the legal authority to enforce the first section of the Fifteenth Amendment throughout the United States. -
Treaty of Washington
Grant's secretary worked out a deal with British Rep. John Rose to create a commision of 12 men, six British and six American. The treaty included the settlement process for the Alabama Claims, settled disputed Atlantic fisheries and the San Juan Boundary. -
Grant Reelected
IT was the 22nd qualrennial presidential election. Ulysses S. Grant was reelected after beating his opponent Horace Greeley. Grant was a rePublican and his running mate was Henry Wilson. -
"Whiskey Ring"
M ostly Rebublican Politicians, the scandel involved the conversion of tax revenues among governments agents, whiskey distillers, and distibutors. -
Last Troops Leave South
The last of the troops leave the south from the compromise of 1877. This also ended the Confederate states of America threw the 14th and 15th Ammendments to the U.S. Constitution.
