Election of 1856
President Pierce re-ran for president in hopes of being reelected, the voters thought he was too controversial so the democratic voters selected James Buchanan as their candidate. -
Scott v Sanford
Scott was living in free territory and he thought he could be free, so he sued the Supreme Court but African Americans were not considered to be citizens and he had to legal right to sue. -
LeCompton Constitution
This was created when the pro-slavery forces in Kansas claimed that they were going to write a constitution that would guarantee slavery within the state. When the anti-slavery forces heard about this and boycotted the Constitutional Convention. the LeCompton Consitution gave people the choice that Kansas would be a slave state or Kansas could be a slave state but no new slaves could enter into the state. -
House Divided Speech
Lincoln discusses how the issue of slavery must be solved whether or not the country was a free or slave country. He talked about how the arguing was going to tear the country apart and it wasn't going to prosper. -
Lincoln-Douglas Debate
The Lincoln-Douglas debate is what put Lincoln into the light, this is what made him known. Lincoln and Douglas had many many disagreements, one thing that they disagreed on was slavery. Lincoln believed that slavery was immoral and shouldn't spread, and Douglas believed the exact opposite. Douglas drew up the Freeport Doctrine and that determined that voters refused to enact any laws that went towards protecting slave property. -
Harpers Ferry
John Brown raided Harper's Ferry in hopes of gaining some guns and starting a slave rebellion, this plan failed. This caused an increase in the slavery conflict between the North and South. -
Election of 1860
This election was based around Pro and Anti-Slavery forces. The presidential candidates were Abraham Lincoln, John Bell, Stephen Douglas, and John Breckenridge. Lincoln won the election and several southern states succeeded from the Union. -
Secession
Southern states such as Alabama, South Carolina, Florida, Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi succeeded from the Union and the Confederacy was established. This lead to the Civil War and the Union army defeated the Confederacy. -
Lincolns 1st Inaugural Address
In his inaugural address, he promised not to interfere with the slavery institution where it already existed. He also promised to temporarily suspend the activity of the federal government in hostile areas. When he was elected he refused to make any compromises with the South so a war broke out and the South broke ties with the Union.
